Women's basketball gains strength by playing tough opponents

12/4/2003

The women’s basketball team’s persistence has been tested so far this season, but the team will get the chance to show what it’s learned at a home game Thursday, Dec. 4,  at Garvey Physical Education Center.

The Falcons will host Ottawa University. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.

The women are 2-7 going into tonight’s game, but they’re not concerned with their slow start. Head coach Gayla Soyez purposely schedules tough opponents for early season nonconference games to help her team prepare for the season.

“The losses help us prepare for what’s coming,” junior guard Stacie Bell said.

Leading the Falcons is Jenny Urban, the lone senior on the squad.

“It all starts tonight,” Urban said. “We are just ready to start playing the games that count.”

As the Falcons turn their backs to preseason and focus on upcoming league play, the opposition won’t get any easier. Ottawa and Southwestern College, whom the Falcons play on Saturday, are returning two players who score over 10 points a game.

“It doesn’t matter who we play, we know we can win,” Urban said.
