Staff stars win preseason in intramural basketball

12/4/2003

The start of the basketball season means the beginning of intramural basketball at Friends University.  Many students look forward to participating in intramurals and enjoy the competitive but fun atmosphere.

“It’s a great time for students like me who have no basketball talent to enjoy the sport,” junior Justin Jamis said.

Jamis enjoys the laid back fun atmosphere of the season, but said that games start getting pretty serious near the post season tournament.

The preseason tournament was Monday, Nov. 24 in the Casado Campus Center.  The Staff Stars defeated the Bruising Bengali Bandits in the championship game.   The Stars players were Biff Green, assistant basketball coaches James and Matt O’Brien, Billy Graf, assistant football coaches Lucas and Lane Schroeder and director of Campus Life Gary Rapp.

Coordinator Kasey Littlefield said student involvement has already improved from last year.

“There were more people watching at the tournament, and we are getting more teams involved,” Littlefield said.

The sign-up for the regular season will start after Christmas at the information desk in Casado and games will start soon after.  The games are on Monday starting at 5 p.m. and the last game will start around 8 p.m.  Teams can have up to ten players and the first eight teams to sign up will receive a free T-shirt.
