The Falcon softball team finishes out conference play with the championship, but there are several important match-ups remaining. Kansas Wesleyan University and Ottawa University both have the opportunity to tie the Falcons for first place, forcing them to share the title.

The team has a 13-3 conference record and 25-11 overall.

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament is fast approaching, leaving the Falcons less than a week for practice.

“I think we have a good chance at taking first,” sophomore pitcher Megan VinZant said.

VinZant is confident the Falcons are prepared for the tournament. The Falcons know the other teams’ strengths and weaknesses, VinZant said. The team will be working on what it needs to do to offset those weaknesses in the next week of practices.

Ottawa and Kansas Wesleyan will be the biggest contenders in the tournament, VinZant said. Friends swept Ottawa in a double-header Monday, April 23.

“They are definitely going to want to get us back,” VinZant said.

Any team can win the tournament, Coach Tony Segovia said. Southwestern College in Winfield will host the tournament May 3-4. Seeds for the tournament will not be determined until late Tuesday, May 1.

“It’s just who’s hitting the ball better and whose pitching is on that day,” he said.

With a seven game winning streak, the Falcon softball team heads into the final game of the season tonight at 6 against Newman University.
