Broken washers cause stinky situation in Green

Friends University freshmen living in Green Residence Hall have been less than pleased with the stinky situation that arose from the broken laundry facilities.

During the first two weeks back to school after Christmas break, three of the four laundry rooms were closed for repairs.

“Once all the students had moved back in, we found out there was a major gas leak somewhere in Green. Somewhere is the key. The guys just found it this week,” said Brian Bollinger, director of Community and Residential Development. “With washing machines that run on gas, we simply couldn’t run them.”

Signs were posted explaining how the washers were down, but little did the residents know that there was a gas leak in Green Hall. The gas leak didn’t cause any harm to the residents; it only disabled the washing machines.

“Things were beginning to get a little grody,” freshman Linley Griffin said. “It was impossible to get any laundry done with only two washers working in all of Green Hall.”

The students who pay the overall fee to live in Green Hall are paying for the laundry services. There were no explanations posted about why the bottom floor’s east and west laundry rooms were closed as well as the top floor’s west wing laundry.

The students continued to experience discouragement walking into the sole crowded working laundry room on the east wing of the boy’s floor for two weeks.

As of Jan. 23, the east wing laundry rooms are both up and running, allowing four washers and four driers for the 132 residents at Green. The gas leak was found on the west wing of Green.

“It would have been cool to know why. I mean we are paying to be able to do our laundry,” said Zach Glover, freshman. “But hey, I got to do laundry with girls for two weeks, so it’s all good.”

Bollinger announced that Green Hall will switch from the gas machines to electric washing machines in late February to early March. The current gas problem will be eliminated, and the machines will run strictly on electricity.

Bollinger was not sure whether the machines on the west wing will be returned to use before the new machines are installed.
