The Falcons men’s golf team has faced its fair share of adversity this season due to weather-related issues. The season suffered a late start due to the extended winter weather and has had one canceled tournament because of inclement weather.
“It has been very challenging all year long,” said head coach Aaron Winter.
The team usually has as many as seven tournaments during a season, but the Falcons have only competed in four at this point during the season.
Sophomore Kevin Middlemist and senior Jay Cargile have been the Falcons' most consistent golfers this season among a team that has many new faces. Freshmen Brett Baxter has been up and down but shows good potential along with junior transfer Jason Eaglin.
The Falcons golfed well in the Sterling College spring invitational at Highland Golf Course in Hutchinson several weekends ago, particularly on the second day of the tournament.
“We started the second day in seventh and were able to jump up two spots and finish in fifth,” said Winter. “It was a difficult course but probably the nicest weather we’ve had at a tournament this year.”
The good showing and two weeks of good practices have given the team momentum as they head into the conference tournament next week. The Falcons are ranked sixth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, but Winter is optimistic and believes the Falcons can realistically grab a top three finish as a team in the tournament.
The KCAC Championship Tournament will take place April 26-27 at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City.
