The Friends women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end against Sterling College, losing 60-72 Feb.27.
The Falcons were down only six points to the future conference champion Sterling College at halftime, but the deficit only grew from there.
“We played with Sterling all game and matched nearly all of their stats, but we just did not convert on turnovers like Sterling did, and it cost us. There was a six-minute lull in the second half where we just struggled to score,” said Coach Gayla Soyez. “I am proud of the way we played though. We never gave in at any point, even when we were down 15 points.”
This loss not only means the end of the season for the Falcons, but the end of the careers of seniors Alyson Snell and Jessica Halsig.
“Snell and Halsig contributed to a combined 27 points per game for us this year, but we will miss their leadership and dedication the most,” said Soyez. “I think they really set a good example for our underclassmen to carry on the tradition of this program.”
Snell and Halsig were right with their average against Sterling, scoring a combined 25 points against Sterling. For Snell, this season helped her recognize the leadership skills she has.
“I've learned a lot about patience,” said Snell. "I feel like I was the person everyone came to and relied on the court. It was hard not to get frustrated sometimes when mistakes were made, but I feel like I handled it pretty well.”
Soyez, Snell and Halsig all agree that this team has been their favorite team. Their sheer want and desire to win and be successful are what made this team a most memorable one.
“I feel like we ran out of time on this season,” said Soyez. “This is a season that I simply did not want to end.”
