Friends University cross country teams will host the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship this weekend at Lake Afton.
Both the men's and women's teams will run against the KCAC colleges to compete for the best time to travel to Fort Vancouver, Wash., for the national cross country meet Nov. 21.
Lake Afton is located near Goddard and is the most commonly used cross country course in Sedgwick County.
The women’s 3K and the men’s 5K races will take the runners on top of the dam two times and alongside the lake before a ¾ mile stretch of a finish.
At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, 70 women from all 10 schools will start the race, followed by 75 men starting at 11:15 a.m.
“Friends has the big advantage of being home this weekend. We have practiced on this course, ran on this course and know this course like the back of our hand,” said head women’s coach Matt Kennedy. “This Saturday will determine nationals.”
Kennedy is expecting the women to come away with the big win, and says the men should do just fine this weekend as well.
