Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference soccer playoffs began at home against Bethel College on Nov. 8. for the Falcon men. They brought in a 3-2 win with overtime, which put them in the mix for the KCAC quarterfinals against Kansas Wesleyan.
The men badly beat up the K-Dub Coyotes, Head Coach Nathan Wilkey said, but they were still unable to bring in a win. There were plenty of chances at the goal, but the opportunities were missed and the advantage lost.
“We should have won the game,” Wilkey said.
The game seemed a disaster not only for the Falcons but also for the Coyotes, who failed to beat McPherson College, their next opponent in the KCAC, Wilkey said.
Winning against Bethel College 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 8 was the boost the Falcon men needed to bring them up against the Coyotes. Having lost to K-Dub, however, the men’s soccer team finished third in the conference.
The team loses five key players this year due to graduation. This leaves the team with plenty of work cut out for it next season, but Wilkey is optimistic about the talent. Wilkey said that the guys have been “growing up a little bit.”
Senior Rusty Shannon was out for the last two games of the season. During the game against Tabor on Nov. 5, he broke his jaw. Sophomore Brent Hobson and freshman Joshua Funk both ended up getting stitches after the game against Sterling on Nov. 1. Funk received 15 stitches and Hobson 10 or so, Wilkey said.
“It was brutal end to the season, Wilkey said.
