Falcon men’s soccer, now approaching the end of regular season, has endured several setbacks and heartbreaking losses on their way to a 9-3-1 overall record. Their conference record of 3-2 places them at third in the conference and 2.5 games behind KCAC leader McPherson College.
Friends’ overall record is second best in the conference but after two consecutive losses to Ottawa and McPherson the Falcons were left searching for answers.
“Not a lot went right against Ottawa,” said Head Coach Nathan Wilkey. “We had 2 starters out against Ottawa and that carried over. We lost another starter against McPherson.”
With four games left before the KCAC Tournament, Friends will look to move up in the conference ranks and then take care of business in the November postseason. A win at home on October 21 has already put the Falcons in good position and snapped the two game losing streak.
“There will be no change to the game plan,” said Wilkey. “We’re outplaying teams but just need to finish and put the ball in the net.”
With several key players suffering from injury this season, the consistent play from Corey Wynn and Josh Funk, have kept the Falcons playing at a high level. Funk currently is tied for 2nd on the team with four goals this season while Wynn has two but has also assisted in two more.
Coach Wilkey is very optimistic about the postseason and determined to lead the Falcons to a conference championship.
“No team is going to want to play us a second time,” said Wilkey.
The Falcons will be on the road for the remaining 4 matches of the season including a rescheduled match from October 14. The KCAC Tournament first round matches are scheduled for Nov. 7 at Tabor College.
