Lady Falcons move into second place, after a solid week
With only two games left to go in conference the Friends softball team has pulled within two games of the leader in the KCAC.
In game one of last weeks double-header against Ottawa, the Lady Falcons were led by junior pitcher Cara Russell who pitched a gem, throwing five innings and giving up only 2 hits.
However it wasn’t just her pitching that turned heads on Thursday. Russell’s bat was electric; she was two for three at the plate with a single and a home-run, while collecting 3 RBI’s. The lady Falcons went on to run-rule Ottawa in the fifth inning with a score of 10 to 0.
Game two didn’t finish as well as the Lady Falcons had hoped for, but they fought all the way to the end as Ottawa scored two runs in extra innings to pull away from Friends with a final score of 5 to 3.
“Our goals still haven’t changed and our team is still focused on winning a conference title,” said junior Amy Martinez.
Heading into the weekend series with only six games to go the Lady Falcons were in need of two wins against Tabor College.
In game one of Saturdays double-header the Lady Falcons found themselves down the entire game and trailed Tabor 5 to 1 going into the last inning.
“We showed true heart and not a single person gave up on the game,” said junior Whitney Sullivan
In the top of the seventh with their backs against the wall, the Lady Falcons tied the game up by scoring four runs and then put one more run up in the eight inning to beat tabor with a final score of 6 to 5.
Game two of the day was another battle with more late inning heroics and the lady Falcons swept the day with a final score of 2 to 1.
Amy Martinez was lights out going four for four with a double.
Friends continued their winning ways on Wednesday with a sweep of the University of St. Mary's.
The Falcons host non-conference Langston University today and will end the regular season on Saturday in Winfield against the Moundbuilders of Southwestern College.
