Tony Segovia, head softball coach, came to Friends in the spring of 2005, just barely in time to introduce himself before he led his 11 girl roster on to the field for competition.
It takes courage for a person to jump in the hot seat, but that’s exactly what Segovia did. Not long after, he led his small roster of ladies to an impressive 17 game winning streak as well as a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference title, in only his first season of coaching.
Segovia is now embarking on his eighth season as the Falcons head coach. His resume includes bringing home four regular season KCAC titles, five KCAC tournament titles, one Regional Tournament title, three National tournament qualifiers and has compiled a 215-89 record in his tenure.
Segovia not only develops National Tournament contending teams year after year, but lays the foundation for a better future for the athletes that play for him.
“I want the girls to be able to be successful on the field, but in the classroom as well,” Segovia said. “Success in school means more than all the wins combined.”
Since Segovia was young he knew what he wanted to do. He spent his first years as an assistant softball and football coach.
He has compassion and love for the game as well as every girl that walks on his field.
He tells his girls to be positive, and to respect others-especially around the campus.
“I have enjoyed every kid.” Segovia said. “It’s a blessing to be able to have this opportunity.”
The impact Segovia has made on his players lives will always provide memories. Many of those memories that the lady Falcons will recall will be of great success.
“My life has been drastically changed by his uplifting attitude,” said Nina Manser, former player. “I know how to give 100 percent at all times.”
